With a total of 80 national parks and 441 wildlife sanctuaries, India's diverse wildlife base is honoured to be the second largest in the world. The country boasts of over 500 species of mammals, more than 2,000 species of birds, over 500 species of reptiles and amphibians and around 30,000 species of insects. National Park in Rajasthan is known for the Royal Bengla Tiger. It came
under the scheme of the Project Tiger in the year 1972. The Sariska Tiger
Reserve is famous for its ti

and a large population of Rhesus monkeys. The Desert National Park is an
excellent example of ecosystem of the Thar desert. The park has an abundant
number of reptiles like monitor lizard, saw sealed viper, Sind Krait,
Russel's viper and Sandfish. Located on the border between the states of
Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park is one of the
best water-bird preserves in the world. The Bandhavgarh National Park in
Madhya Pradesh is known far and wide for the density of its big cat
population. The Kaziranga National Park in Assam is one of the few places in
India where the Indian one-horned rhino can be seen in its natural habitat.
Established in the year 1936, the Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal is
India's first national park and first sanctuary to come under the Project
Tiger. It is famous for its wild population of tigers, leopards, elephants
and large cats. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala is famous for
Indian elephants, frolicking by the Periyar lake. The Asiatic Lion can be
viewed at the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Gujarat.
